Stories about rescuing Old New York a landmark at a time are all the rage nowadays.
In March, a slice shop tucked into the southbound 1 train concourse at 50th Street suddenly materialized. Last month the pillar-mounted vending machines that dispensed candy and gum in your parents’ youth began to reappear.
Now — don’t blink — it is New York’s first ever made-to-order sandwich shop, and it lives in a converted newsstand near Bryant Park at the corner of Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street.
Called Little Biggs, the reclaimed newsstand preserves a beloved piece of the city’s streetscape while demonstrating how historic structures like this can be thoughtfully reimagined as vibrant culinary destinations that elevate street-side dining for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
Imagine saying goodbye to Sabrett dirty-water dogs and hello to the likes of “Vodka Chicken Parm” or Brisket Cheesesteak accompanied perhaps with house-made lemonade. Little Biggs features breakfast. (Yes there is a BEC and bagels, because NYC. Is there a better reason than that?)
